Coffee and alcohol with tinnitus: what is true and what is a myth

Updated June 2026 Author AURALIS team 6 min read

In short

Coffee does not worsen tinnitus: a study of more than 65,000 women found that those who consume more caffeine have, if anything, a slightly lower risk. Giving up coffee does not help. Alcohol, on the other hand, is individual: in some it triggers or temporarily increases the ringing and it disrupts sleep, which is what really matters. More useful than total abstinence is observing what happens in your own case.

"Cut out coffee and alcohol": it is one of the first pieces of advice you hear when tinnitus appears. But is it really true? The scientific answer is more nuanced — and for coffee it is actually reassuring.

Coffee: the myth is busted

Caffeine does not worsen tinnitus. In a prospective study of 65,085 women followed for 18 years, those who consumed more caffeine had a lower risk of tinnitus, not higher (Glicksman, 2014). Abruptly stopping coffee can also cause withdrawal headaches and irritability — which certainly do not help. So: if you enjoy it, you can continue.

Alcohol: it depends on you

With alcohol, the story is different and very personal. In some people a drink triggers or temporarily increases the ringing, in others nothing changes. But there is a more consistent and often underestimated effect: alcohol fragments sleep. And poor sleep is one of the things that makes tinnitus more present and more bothersome the next day.

The personal experiment

  • Observe, do not cut out from the start. For one week note your coffee, alcohol and how the ringing evolves.
  • Look for a pattern. Does the ringing actually change after coffee? After a drink in the evening do you sleep worse?
  • Be guided by your own data. If something bothers you, reduce it. If not, do not deprive yourself unnecessarily.

What really matters

More than any specific food, in tinnitus what weighs most is sleep and stress. An evening without alcohol that lets you sleep better is worth more than a thousand pointless abstentions. Focus your energy there: consistent schedules, relaxation, sound therapy.

In short

Coffee does not worsen tinnitus — quite the opposite — so you can keep it. Alcohol is personal and mainly disrupts sleep: observe its effect on you rather than cutting it out in principle. The real goal remains good sleep and stress control.
